The Faculty of Science Sports Awards Ceremony 2023, held on August 30, 2024, at the New Arts Theatre (NAT), University of Colombo, was a landmark event celebrating the exceptional sporting talents of Faculty of Science undergraduates. Organized in partnership with the National Youth Services Council (NYSC), this ceremony was a tribute to athletes who have excelled in their respective fields, marking the first-ever such recognition in the faculty's history.

The ceremony began with a reception at the Statistics Department building at 3:30 p.m., followed by the formal awards presentation at 4:00 p.m. at the NAT. Although Vice Chancellor Senior Prof. H.D. Karunaratne and Mr. Pasindu Gunarathne, Chairman/Director General of the NYSC, were unable to attend due to prior commitments, the event was honored by the presence of Senior Prof. Upul Sonnadara, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Prof. Nihal Hennayake, Chairman of the Sports Advisory Board, who officiated the proceedings.

This inaugural awards ceremony recognized student-athletes across several categories, showcasing their dedication and contributions to sports:

1. Faculty of Science Sports Awards – Celebrating the general sporting achievements of undergraduates.
2. Special Awards for University Team Captains and Vice-Captains – Honoring the leadership and contributions of team captains and vice-captains who guided their peers with distinction.
3. Special Awards for SLUSA Colours – Commending students who were awarded Sri Lanka University Sports Association Colours.
4. Special Awards for National/International Representation – Recognizing students who represented Sri Lanka at the national or international level, bringing pride to the university and the nation.
5. Awards for the Sportsman and Sportswoman with the Most Number of Sports Awards – Highlighting athletes who excelled in multiple sports disciplines throughout the year.

In his speech, Senior Prof. Upul Sonnadara emphasized the importance of balancing sports and academics, and how events like this not only celebrate success but also encourage greater participation in sports among undergraduates. He noted the significance of this event in uplifting the culture of sports within the Faculty of Science and expressed his gratitude to everyone who worked hard to bring this ceremony to life.

Senior Prof. Nalin de Silva, Senior Treasurer of the Faculty of Science Sports Association, also shared his insights, reflecting on his own experiences as a student-athlete and emphasizing the lifelong value of sports in shaping individuals. His words served as an inspiration to the students, encouraging them to strive for excellence in both academics and sports.

The event concluded with a musical performance during dinner at the Statistics Department building, where athletes, faculty members, and guests gathered to celebrate the day’s achievements and strengthen the bonds within the sporting community.

The success of the Faculty of Science Sports Awards Ceremony 2023 was a collective effort. Special thanks were extended to Vice Chancellor Senior Prof. H.D. Karunaratne, Chairman/Director General of the NYSC Mr. Pasindu Gunarathne, Dean of the Faculty of Science Senior Prof. Upul Sonnadara, Senior Treasurer of the Faculty of Science Sports Association Senior Prof. Nalin de Silva, Prof. Hasini Perera, Faculty of Science, the Executive Committee and members of the Faculty of Science Sports Association, and all other individuals and organizations who played a role in making this event a reality. Their hard work and dedication were instrumental in ensuring the ceremony's success.

Ultimately, the primary purpose of the event was to inspire and motivate more Faculty of Science undergraduates to actively engage in sports, promoting a holistic university experience that fosters both academic and athletic growth.

The Dean’s List Award Ceremony of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, marked another milestone in recognising academic excellence. Held on the 30th of September 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the event took place in the vibrant atmosphere of the ILC Auditorium.

This year's ceremony honoured 54 exceptional students, almost doubling last year’s tally, as their outstanding academic performances were celebrated by faculty members, guests, and proud families. The event commenced with a heartfelt welcome by Senior Professor Upul Sonnadara, Dean of the Faculty of Science, setting a tone of pride and achievement for the evening.

Deshamanya Professor Jayaratna Banda Disanayake, a distinguished emeritus professor and leading authority on the Sinhala language, delivered the first keynote address, offering the audience valuable insights into the power of language and education. Following the award presentation, which saw each of the 54 students recognised for their remarkable achievements, Hon. Justice Sobhitha Rajakaruna, a sitting Judge of the Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka, took the stage for the second keynote speech, inspiring students with his reflections on justice, leadership, and the importance of intellectual pursuit.

To commemorate the occasion, FOS Media captured official photographs of the awardees with faculty members. The event concluded with a lively fellowship session, complete with a colourful photo booth and musical performances, where students, staff, and guests created cherished memories to mark the evening’s success.

The Faculty of Science held its General Convocation 2023 on 4th October 2023 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, Colombo. The event was graced by the Vice Chancellor Senior Professor H.D. Karunaratne, Rector, Deans of Faculties, Directors of Institutes, Registrar, Acting Librarian, Bursar, academic and administrative staff, and graduands and parents.

The Vice Chancellor conferred the BSc and BSc (Honors) degrees to 510 students of the Faculty of Science. The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Senior Professor D.U.J. Sonnadara readout the names of students who won awards and medals. The Faculty of Sciences wishes the graduating class of 2023 the very best.

                 From October 6th to 9th, 2024, a delegation from Sri Lanka visited Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) in South Korea as part of the Leading University Project for International Cooperation (LUPIC) between SKKU and the University of Colombo. The delegation included Prof. Sampath Amaratunge, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Prof. H. D. Karunaratne, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, and Prof. Upul Sonnadara, Dean of the Faculty of Science.

Hosted by Prof. Sangho Lee, Director of LUPIC and a Professor of the Department of Biological Sciences at SKKU, the visit began with a working lunch and presentations from both universities. The delegates toured various research and academic facilities, including the Department of Biological Sciences, the Cooperative Center for Research Facilities, and the Laboratory Animal Research Center. Key meetings were held with SKKU deans and research leaders to discuss potential collaborative projects.

On the second day, the delegation visited the SKKU Humanities and Social Sciences campus in Seoul, followed by cultural tours of Changdeokgung Palace and its Secret Garden. The visit concluded with a final working dinner, further strengthening the ties between the two institutions.

This visit marks a significant step toward enhanced academic cooperation and research partnerships between South Korea and Sri Lanka.

Applications are invited from 4th-year female students for 07 available spots at the Siva Chinnathambi Women’s Hostel, allocated for the Faculty of Science. The selection criteria are as follows:

1.    Academic Merit: Performance in previous academic years will be considered.
2.    Extra-Curricular Achievements: Priority will be given to final-year students who have excelled in sports and other extracurricular activities.
3.    Disability Consideration: Final-year female students with disabilities will also receive priority.
